Connective Tissue Grafts in South Ogden and Kaysville, UT
What Are Connective Tissue Grafts?
Connective tissue grafts are the most common and well-known tissue grafting procedure used to help treat gum recession and subsequent root exposure. It's a procedure that will help reduce the sensitivity and danger that is created by allowing the root of your tooth to be exposed when it should really be covered up by healthy gum tissue and protected.
Connected tissue grafts, then, are a type of tissue grafting that use tissue from the top of the inside of your mouth. To access this tissue, a small area of skin is partially removed from the roof of the mouth (also known as the palate). The tissue we need is underneath that area, and is known as subepithelial connective tissue. We will remove some of this tissue, and then stitch the skin flap that was partially opened back down. The subepithelial tissue that we collected will then be stitched to gum tissue around the exposed tooth root in question.
What Does a Connective Tissue Graft Accomplish?
Does a Connective Tissue Graft Solve the Problem Permanently?
Connective tissue grafts are quite effective at restoring your gum line and repairing the gum recession you have experienced; issues could develop again if the proper precautions are not taken. If there was something you did, or didn't do, that caused the recession in the first place, in other words, then that behavior will need to be changed in order to avoid further gum problems. If the same habits are continued, then it is possible that new gum issues could arise.
If you maintain good oral health and hygiene habits, however, and follow your dentist's advice, you should be able to maintain your new, healthy gum line.
