What Is Gum Tissue Grafting?
A gum graft may be required to protect your teeth against gum recession and improve your smile. Gum recession is a condition where the tissue around the tooth pulls away, revealing more of the tooth or the tooth root.
An exposed tooth can result in increased sensitivity, particularly when eating hot or cold foods. If not treated in time, it may also cause tooth loss.
Causes of Gum Recession
4%-12% of adults suffer from gum recession. It is usually not noticeable unless it becomes rather severe. Here are the five main causes of gum recession:
• Gum disease
• Naturally thin gum tissue
• Aggressive brushing
• Tooth loss
• Previous dental treatments
Gum Tissue Graft: The Procedure
The type of gum tissue graft depends on the specific needs of a patient. The three different kinds of procedures include:
Connective-Tissue Grafts
This is the most common technique to treat root exposure. It involves cutting a flap of skin at the roof of your mouth (palate). The subepithelial connective tissue, which lies under the flap, is removed and stitched to the gum tissue around the exposed root. Once the connective tissue or graft is taken from the palatal flap, the flap is stitched again.
Free Gingival Grafts
Like connective-tissue graft, this procedure also involves cutting out the tissue from the palate. However, instead of forming a flap and removing the tissue underneath it, a tiny piece of tissue is directly taken from the roof of the mouth. This is then attached to the affected gum area. The free gingival grafts method is suitable for people with naturally thin gums who need an extra tissue to enlarge them.
Pedicle Grafts
This procedure entails taking tissue from the gum near the tooth that requires repair. The flap, known as the pedicle, is cut away only partially to keep one edge attached in place. The gum is then pulled downward and stitched back to cover the exposed root. This technique is only suited for people with enough gum near the tooth.
