Dental Implant FAQs

A dental implant is a titanium or zirconium appliance that is surgically installed in your jaw bone to support a false tooth appliance, be it a crown, a bridge, or a fixed denture system. An implant is used to act as the root of a tooth after extraction or when a tooth is missing for any other reason.

To get a dental implant, you will be diagnosed in one appointment and then will come back later for the procedure. In some instances, you will need a bone graft if your jawbone is too shallow or thin to support the implant on its own. In that case, you will have options such as a cadaver graft or synthetic graft, or bone taken from a donor site in another area of your body and implanted into your jaw. If you need a bone graft, it will take some time for that to heal. When it does, or if you don't need one at all, you will be ready for surgery. During this surgery, you will be under anesthesia. Then our expert surgeon will make an incision in the gum line and create a hole in your jaw where the implant will then be inserted. The area will then be sealed and you will be able to get on track for healing so that your dental appliance can be attached.

When you get dental implants, there are some options to replace your missing tooth. You can get a crown to fill in the space of a single tooth, or if many teeth are missing, you may get a permanent bridge to cover a larger space. If you have a lot more damage or are getting on in years, you may be getting a fixed denture system instead. These utilize 4–6 implants to hold a full set of dentures in place.
