The Process of Getting Dental ImplantsGetting dental implants has become an easier process than it was years ago. Now, through dentistry advances, it can be done with a lot less invasion and faster healing times. The process begins with making sure your mouth is a healthy candidate for dental implants. You need healthy gums and a strong jaw bone. Titanium posts are put into your jaw during your implant surgery, which then fuse together during the healing process. These posts are what are going to hold your implants, just like your roots held your teeth originally. Temporary implants are placed on top of these posts while you heal, which will later be replaced by your permanent dental implants.
Depending on the type of implants you get and how healthy your mouth was to start the process, it can take anywhere from 3–12 months for your jawbone to fully heal after getting the implants. Once your jaw bone has healed and the titanium has fused to your bone, you will then get your dental implants placed. They will look just like your regular teeth, and they will also function like your teeth did prior to them being removed. You will get small adjustments made when they are placed, but then should be able to go about life like normal as soon as we have put them in.
What happens if I'm not a good candidate for implants? There are things that can be done to help bring your mouth into the better health to make you a better candidate for dental implants in most instances. If you are not a good candidate because you smoke, then quitting smoking is often recommended because it can help to restore the health of your mouth. If your gums are not healthy, periodontic treatment can help to restore health to your gums. Should your jaw bone have started to resorb, you may need soft tissue grafting to help give you enough tissue to hold the titanium posts securely in place.
If you want to be able to have a set of implants that reside on four posts in your top or your bottom arch, then the All-on-4® Treatment Concept is going to be the best option for you. Give us a call and let us explain how these implants are different, and what they can offer you.
